Process & finishes
Finish options and how a project moves from photo to finished iron.
Four ways to finish steel
Not sure which one fits your project? Ask in your estimate request and we'll recommend one.
Raw Forged Steel
The honest look of the forge — hammer marks, heat color and all. Left bare, no primer, so you can seal, wax, paint or let it patina.
Powder Coat
A baked-on, durable coating in black or the color of your choice — tell us the color name or code in your estimate request.
Hot-Dip Galvanized
The finished piece is cleaned and dipped in molten zinc, which bonds to the steel inside and out. Our toughest rust protection for outdoor and coastal work. Matte silver-gray, and it can be powder coated on top.
Metallized (Zinc Spray)
Molten zinc is sprayed onto blast-cleaned steel. A good fit for large pieces that won't fit in a galvanizing tank. It can be sealed or painted over.
Hot-dip galvanizing can sometimes leave a rough, uneven surface — drips, small lumps or a mottled gray where the zinc collects, especially on detailed scrollwork. That's normal for the process and doesn't reduce the rust protection. Metallizing usually comes out smoother and more even. If the look matters as much as the protection, tell us in your estimate request and we'll recommend the right one.
